Weardale Crafts

About us

Myself and my mother sew and crochet all of the items. A few of the knitted ones are made by someone else. Hairpin and broomstick crochet are both traditional Weardale styles, and we make these along with traditional granny blankets and throws. We do other various crafts  teaching and demonstrating also. We were both born and have always lived in Weardale and many skills have been passed down from my grandmother and great grandmother.

Materials

All materials are new. We put a ball band on each crochet or knit item for washing instructions. We do not have a big stockpile of blankets as we have to allow for any orders but have a few on the website at any one time.

Styles Of Crochet

Hairpin crochet is very fine and was literally made with a hairpin from the ladies hair to make crochet items for her bottom drawer. Obviously the hairpins used today are of various sizes and bought as a craft item. Broomstick crochet is made with a crochet hook and broomstick worked together, this is usually for a larger item and is not as fine as hairpin but could be done on a knittng needle instead of a broomstick to make the item finer. They are both Weardale crafts and can be used for any number of items including shawls and blankets especially for christening and new babies.
